A four-module postgraduate curriculum in perinatal mental health, free to download and adapt for your own institution.
The eMAMA training programme is a postgraduate curriculum in perinatal mental health for nurses, midwives, clinical officers and other health professionals working in maternal and child health services. It was developed and validated by nine partner universities in Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, and piloted in Malawi, Namibia and Zambia.
The programme is distributed as Moodle course backup files. You restore them into your own Moodle installation and adapt them to your institution’s regulations, calendar and clinical context. The package contains no student data and no fixed dates — it arrives ready to configure.
Before you download — what you need
A Moodle installation of your own. These are course backup files, not a hosted course. You need administrator or course-creator rights on a Moodle site.
Moodle version. The backups were created in Moodle 4.5.4. Moodle backups are not backwards-compatible — a backup cannot be restored into an older Moodle than the one that produced it.
Plugins — install these before restoring. The courses use activities that depend on plugins. If a plugin is missing at the time of restore, those activities are dropped silently and you will not be told which ones.
Custom Certificate (mod_customcert) — required for the end-of-module certificate.
H5P — included in Moodle core from 3.9 onwards; no separate install needed on current versions.

What to change before you deliver
Note! Module 4 cannot be delivered without local clinical governance
Module 4 is a work-based clinical placement involving real perinatal patients. Before running it, your institution must put in place its own placement supervision and supervisor sign-off process, student insurance or professional indemnity for clinical practice, ethical approval and patient consent process for the work-based project, and confidentiality handling for reflective logs and portfolios.
Reflective logs and portfolios contain real clinical encounters. They must never be included in a course backup that is shared or redistributed.
The placement requirement is set at 270 hours in the pilot. Adjust this to your own accreditation rules.
Licence and attribution
The eMAMA training programme and handbook are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence. You are free to use, adapt, translate and redistribute the materials, including commercially, provided you credit the source and license your adaptations under the same terms.
The licence covers the course content and the handbook. It does not cover the eMAMA name and logo, or the eMAMA mobile application, which is a separate product distributed under its own terms.
